Communication Studies

A subject gateway for Communication Studies

The Writing Center

The Towson University Writing Center is an excellent resource for learning how to write and cite confidently. With evening& weekend hours and virtual tutoring.

Communication studies research is cited using the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA Style) and it helps facilitate the scholarly conversation that you are now an active part of! You don't need to become an APA expert overnight. Remember that you have library resources like these guides and your Librarian available to you whenever you get stuck.

When it comes time to write your paper, you will have an easier time managing both in-text and bibliographic references if you plan for it in the early stages of the research process. As you read and collect information, take note of a few key components:

WHO...are the author(s)?
WHAT...is the title of the article or text?
WHERE...did you find this? This means not only what Journal or website, but what page number.
WHEN...was this written?
HOW...could you find this again? This would be a doi or permalink to lead you back to the source with ease.

More Information

While this guide provides examples for many of the most common sources you may need to cite and attempts to represent variations within those sources, it is not comprehensive. If you need more help, you should refer to the APA style website, in particular pages linked here regarding the elements of reference list entries and what to do about missing reference information.
