Things to Think about:

  • WHO wrote it / is responsible for the content? LATERAL READING: What is their reputation? Do they have the expertise they claim they do?
  • WHERE does it appear/was it published? LATERAL READING: What is the site's/source's reputation? What is its purpose? What biases does it have?
  • WHEN is the information from?
  • WHAT:
    • Is the source relevant to your topic/question/thesis?
    • What type of evidence does the source use?
    • What is the tone/type of bias?
    • What does the author argue, or want you to do based on the source?
  • Remember to read laterally and only spend time on WHAT once you have a sense of WHO & WHERE.
