In this guide

Examples in this guide page were created using the Chicago Manual of Style 17th edition (2017). Material requiring citation uses an in-text citation. For each author-date citation in the text, there must be a corresponding entry in the reference list, which occurs at the end of your paper. Remember, your professor is the final authority for the bibliographic form, including spacing used in your paper.

In-text Citations

Within the in-text citation, the author's last name is listed first, followed by the year of publication of the source, then the page number noting the location of the cited material within the original source.

Example: (Brown 2001, 156)

For periodical articles, a month and day may be included after the title.

Examples throughout all pages of this guide show in-text citation examples within parenthesesfollowing the bibliographic citations.
