EDUC 203 Teaching and Learning in a Diverse Society

For the Children's Books Literature Study assignment, students often find it helpful to:

• Use the TeachingBooks database to search for books with varied cultural representation. Most pages within TeachingBooks have lesson plans, author interviews, videos, and author/illustrator name pronunciations, all of which can be helpful for this assignment.
• Locate the books in the library catalog and in the library
• Analyze children's literature for theme and representation (in order to summarize and find teaching/learning connections)

The Children's Collection is at the back right corner of Cook Library's 4th Floor. Follow the process in the second video on this page to get the location for books (Juvenile Fiction or Juvenile) their call numbers for books, titles, and authors. Juvenile Fiction books are shelved in alphabetical order by author last name. Nonfiction is in Dewey Decimal order, with Biographies shelved at the end of nonfiction. If you need assistance finding books visit the 3rd floor Research Help Desk or use our Ask a Librarian chat service. Checkout is at the front right of the library's 3rd floor.

Borrowing Materials from other University System of Maryland Libraries

TU faculty, staff, and students may borrow materials in-person at other USMAI libraries using their TU ID cards.  They may also place requests for USMAI items to be shipped to the Albert S. Cook Library, by using the Request Item link on the catalog or Cook OneSearch. Requests usually arrive within 2-3 business days!

 Materials that are not available at Cook Library or other USMAI schools can often be requested and delivered to Cook Library through the ILLiad Interlibrary Loan Service (ILL). 

Additionally, TU patrons may visit and borrow books from the libraries at Goucher College, McDaniel College, MICA, and Stevenson University using their current TU ID and a second, state-issued ID.
