Primary Sources in Performing Arts

A source's primary-ness is contextual. Sources close to the subject studied are more primary, and sources far away are more secondary. For example, in a study of Martha Graham's choreography for Appalachian Spring, primary sources might include: the music score; the choreographic notes; the correspondence between Graham and the work's composer, Aaron Copland; the set design; reviews of the premiere performance; interviews with the dancers; relevant writings by Graham and Copland. These sources are more primary because they offer first-hand accounts of the creative process or of the first performance. The links provided here are to resources likely to send researchers to primary sources, but not all materials found through these resources will be primary for every project, and researchers will certainly find primary sources elsewhere.
