Academic Advising

The Academic Advising, Retention & Completion Office (AARC) works to ensure that informed, effective, and easily accessible academic advising, which addresses individual needs and interests, is available to every undergraduate student at Towson University.

 

The Office of Academic Advising Provides:

  • resources for prospective and current students
  • our center’s programs and partner programs, including the First Year Experience (FYE), Freshman Transition Program (FTP), undeclared student advising, and our academic intervention programs
  • campus resources and tools for students and faculty advisors
  • information for transfer students, including orientation, credit evaluation
  • University Core Curriculum (general education) Requirements 

Accessibility & Disability Services

Accessibility and Disability Services (ADS) is a unit within the Office of Inclusion and Institutional Equity and part of the TU commitment to promoting a diverse and inclusive campus that is welcoming to all. ADS collaborates with students, faculty and staff to ensure equal opportunity and create an accessible educational experience for students with disabilities.

Center for Student Diversity

The Center for Student Diversity (CSD) was established to aid the university in its efforts to foster inclusion, collaboration and relationship building. We provide academic, social and transition support for underserved students and promote exchanges and dialogue between individuals of diverse backgrounds and identities.

They provide:

  • Support for multicultural student organizations
  • Financial assistance to under-represented undergraduate and graduate students
  • Diversity awareness in and out of class seminars, workshops, and presentations
  • A weekend Diversity Retreat
  • Nationally celebrated heritage programs
  • Diversity educational and resource materials
  • Advocacy, consultation, and referrals
  • Leadership, mentorship, and peer education programs
  • Provide educational outreach to build awareness, appreciation, and allyship of diverse student populations and communities
  • Assist the university in the outreach, recruitment, and retention efforts for students of color and other under-represented populations
  • Assist the institution in the creation of policies and procedures that address the interests and concerns of under-represented students

First Generation College Support

Many first generation college students may feel extra pressure is put on them to succeed. Success is not just for yourself, but also for the entire family and/or community. 

It is important to talk to your friends, family, and community to make sure they know how you feel. There are also places on campus that you can help you, such as:

Basic Needs Support

Foodshare: Over 30 percent of college students lack reliable access to nutritious food. The Foodshare provides 10 free food and toiletry items per week to TU community members.

Basic Needs by Zip Code: Need help locating support off campus? Start by reviewing the options available in your neighborhood.

Student Emergency Fund: Are you dealing with a financial emergency? Review the eligibility of the Student Emergency Fund to see if you qualify.

Emergency Housing: If you are experiencing homelessness, review the local options for emergency shelters and schedule an appointment with Student Affairs to discuss the additional support that may be available to you.

Financial Needs Support

Financial Literacy: Interested in taking control of your finances? Towson University provides free access to WhichWay, an interactive tool that teaches the basics of financial literacy. Simply enter the code 8607 and add your TU email.

Financial Aid: Did you know that each TU student is assigned a financial aid adviser? Reach out today to discuss what options might be available to you.

Student Emergency Fund: Are you dealing with a financial emergency? Review the eligibility of the Student Emergency Fund to see if you qualify.

Career Center: Need help finding sustainable on- and off-campus employment? Not sure where to start? The Career Center is here to guide you.

Physical & Mental Wellness

Health Center: Are you experiencing health concerns? The Health Center offers a full array of health services to TU students.

Counseling Center: The Counseling Center offers same day in-person or virtual appointments with 24/7 access to mental health professionals and a crisis line even on holidays and weekends.

Campus Recreation: Utilize our state-of-the-art facilities and programs that promote active and healthy lifestyles.

Togetherall: Would you prefer to speak with other students experiencing similar mental health struggles? Do so comfortably and easily under the guidance of a trained clinician through the Togetherall platform.

Kognito: Are you interested in learning more about how you can recognize and support the signs of distress in your peers? Take part in a brief and interactive Kognito training. Create an account and use “towsonstudent” as the enrollment key to launch the training.

Temporary Accommodations: Have you experienced an injury or illness that requires the support of temporary accommodations? Contact Accessibility & Disability Services to see if you qualify.

Pregnancy: If you are expecting a child, you are eligible for specific accommodations and support. Contact the Office of Institutional Inclusion and Equity for information.

Covid Response & Planning: Stay up-to-date on Towson University’s COVID-19 policies and support.

Imminent Concerns: If you are imminently concerned for your wellbeing or the wellbeing of another student, please contact TUPD at 410-704-4444.

Health Center

The Health Center offers a full range of primary, urgent and preventive health care services for our students. Their staff encourage you to take an active role in your health, and are dedicated to providing the highest level of care, while maintaining confidentiality. The Health Center promotes public health by maintaining immunization compliance for the campus community.

 

Health Center Hours: Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Counseling Center

The Counseling Center exists to help all students deal constructively both with normal and extraordinary challenges and stresses of college life. Through personal counseling and other services, our professional clinicians can assist you to better resolve problems in living, learning new life skills, and increase your personal resilience and resourcefulness.

 

To reach the Counseling Center, please call 410-704-2512. You can schedule an appointment or get more information during normal business hours (Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.). Immediate crisis support is available by phone at all times outside of business hours.

Tutoring & Learning Center

The Tutoring and Learning Center is dedicated to providing high quality tutoring, supplemental instruction, peer-assisted learning sessions, academic coaching, study groups and study skills workshops.

The Towson University Writing Center is an excellent resource for learning how to write and cite confidently. Meet with friendly, interested readers during any stage of the writing process from idea to first draft.
