Towson University Campus Development

This guide holds information related to the physical development of TU's campus.

1915-1960: Almost Fifty Years of Slow Growth

State Teachers College at Towson, ca. 1946

While the world churned outside the campus borders, grappling with two world wars, other conflicts, and a global pandemic, the campus at Towson remained small. Only eight buildings were constructed during this time, half of them devoted to housing students, including two for male students. No other classroom buildings were constructed so classes continued to be held in the Administration Building. The four other buildings were support ones: a library, a gymnasium, and a building to house the campus elementary school, an important component for a teachers college.

The need to expand that school in 1960 was the tipping point for a new era of fast growth on the campus.
