Transition from teachers' college to liberal arts

Construction of Linthicum Hall

First building boom

In 1963, Maryland transitioned all state teachers colleges to liberal arts colleges as the post-WWII population boom stretched the capacities of higher education institutes, and STC became Towson State College (TSC). This led to huge jumps in enrollment for the school, and the need for more classroom space became paramount.

Meanwhile, the need to keep finding ways to grow campus meant acquiring land, which it began doing in 1959, purchasing land from Sheppard and Enoch Pratt Hospital which was southeast of the original campus. By 1966, TSC had tripled the campus' size, bringing the total land to about 300 acres which is very close to the 329 acres we have today.
