Cite While You Write

Inserting Citations

EndNote's Cite While You Write function allows to you insert in-text citations in a Word document in a format you have chosen. You'll then be able to create a bibliography for your manuscript or paper.

Once you have installed either EndNote X9/EndNote 20 or downloaded the CWYW tool from EndNote Web/Basic/Online, you will see an EndNote tab in your Word ribbon.

  1. Select the bibliographic style that you wish to use.
  2. Place your cursor where you want the citation to appear.
  3. Click "Insert Citation" and search in your library.
  4. Continue in this manner until you have completed adding citations.
  5. Click on "Update Citations and Bibliography" to insert the reference list.
  6. Note that you can change the output style at any time.
