What is EndNote?

EndNote is a reference management software with features for:

  1. keeping all your references in one searchable personal library
  2. managing your references according to project
  3. collaborate with others who use EndNote
  4. cite your references in word processing documents to create formatted citations and bibliographies

There is a free version -- EndNote Online/Web/Basic -- and a paid desktop version -- EndNote X9 or EndNote 20. Desktop users also get an EndNote Online account for sharing and collaborating.

Getting Started with EndNote

EndNote Web, Online, Basic (free version)

  1. Register for an account at EndNote's registration page.
  2. Download the Cite-While-You-Write tool.
  3. Get started managing your references and formatting citations.

Storage: 2GB or 50,000 references. Citation styles: 21.

EndNote X9 or EndNote 20 (paid version)

  1. Purchase EndNote.
  2. Register your license.
  3. Get started managing your references and formatting citations.
  4. Your EndNote license purchase will allow you to have an EndNote Online account where you can sync and share a specified EndNote library. Register for an account at EndNote's registration page and then go to Edit > Preferences > Sync and log in with your account information.

Storage: unlimited. Citation styles: unlimited.

Cite While You Write

CWYW will automatically install with your purchase of EndNote Desktop. From the web, you can install the CWYW plugin by going to Downloads > Cite While You Write.

EndNote Mobile App

Visit the Apple app store to download EndNote for iOS.
