Cite only original content from social media, meaning that you want to go back to the original source and cite that original source if you find that original source via social media. For example, if you find a blog post via a Tweet and you want to cite the blog post, your reference should be to the blog post rather than the Tweet.
Do not alter the spelling and capitalization in social media references, even if it is not the standard spelling or capitalization. You want to retain hashtags, emojis, and links. If you can't retain an emoji image, you want to place the emoji's full name in brackets and full names can be found at https://unicode.org/emoji/charts/full-emoji-list.html.
The title of social media posts, including but not limited to Tweets, Instagram Photo Captions, and Facebook Status Updates, should be the content of the post up to the first 20 words, in italics, followed by a description of audiovisuals in brackets.
Social media content that "disappears" and thus cannot be retrieved by readers should be cited as a personal communication.
